Feel Good Music
I’m sad about Olivia Dean’s cassette not being on sale in the states. Tapes are one thing I indulge in now to help me slow down and get back to being present as much as I can. I don’t really like streaming services, I rather go back to buying an album and consuming it whole.
Memories of girlhood encourages me to write for my inner child and teenager. To free write and not worry about how it comes out.
In Bone Black it is hard to grasp on who she talks to. I enjoy not knowing where to land within that. It like the more you follow here you get it but then she takes your somewhere else like fragments of memory.
Altars of Sacrifice: Re-membering basquiat was one of the first art essays by hooks that I read during grad school. It significantly formed my thesis and gave structure to what my practice is currently (in 2026).However when I read the essay it was in her “Outlaw Culture: Resisting Representations” publication from 1994.
I enjoy theory and storytelling. I believe many of hook’s work dares me to dream about what “how far is too far?” looks like in my practice.
The foreword of this book is absolutely beautiful and is a great reminder not only of who hooks is, but also of our position as readers, consumers, and admirers.
I connect Ta-Nehisi’s notes in Between the world and me where he illustrates in several ways “loss of my body” to the loss that hooks illustrates in this collection.
